DANCE NIGHT AT THE FORT - 2/7/2011
A touch of 1940's nostalgia
By Andy Gilbert
Newhaven Fort almost always has something going on and it occasionally hosts a 1940's-themed jazz night. Sadly there's only one this year - there are usually three - and it was last night (July 2nd).
It was, as always, sold out and the place was packed. Quite a few people got into the swing of things with 1940's clothes and uniforms and everyone enjoyed a splendid atmosphere and some great music.
The live band, known simply as 'The Jazz Band', were on fine form. Although numerically a few members light for a true 'big band', their musical director's arrangements more than made up for it and the sound was true 1940's, in the Glenn Miller style. The lead alto sax player doubled on vocals and she gave us some excellent renditions of numbers from the likes of Ella Fitzgerald and Vera Lynn.
The dance floor was packed all night, as you can see from the photos.
It was a little surprising, and somewhat heartening, to see so many young people in their 20's amongst those who had lived through the war years. They not only danced the night away but many were singing along, especially with the final vocal number, 'We'll Meet Again'. This music will never die!
So, although you can't do it this year, watch out for next year's event(s). Book early as they sell out very fast!
