Amongst my old colour slides I came across the one shown here which appears to be of a heavy barge crane possibly connected to some form of reconstruction work being undertaken in the area of the East Quay. 

Although the photo was taken by me I cannot recall the date it was taken what, if any, work was undertaken nor why it was required and wonder if anyone can advise me on this?

Vaguely remember this one. I think the crane is Russian or East German, judging by the red band on the small funnel, and I think the tug that brought her in can be seen up at the ferry berth. I think this may just have been a stop-over for stores or refuelling.

I think this was the heavy lift crane owned by 'Ulrich Harms' that came into Newhaven and then went out to raise the wreck of a trawler from Portsmouth that was run down in the English Channel by a Cypriot registered cargo vessel that did not stop, and of course sadly this also involved the recovery of the crew members bodies.

With no further thoughts on this one coming forward it seems likely that the comment from Ian Wallis is the correct interpretation of the picture. I am grateful to you both Andy and Ian for your interest and advice.
