NEWHAVEN MANY YEARS AGO

Old Photograph taken on the west side of the river

By Derek Longly

Passed down to me by my grandparents is this very old photo showing Newhaven before much had been built beyond Fort Road.

Two paddle wheel cross-channel ships can be seen to the right, one on each side of the river, which most probably dates the picture to the 1880's to 1890's. The sheerlegs at the Marine Workshops were already in existence as these can be seen in the distance.

I would be interested to know if anyone can put an accurate date to the photo.

Not an exact date but the Sheffield Arms Hotel (Or Harbourside as it is today) can be seen and that was built in 1891.
