NEWHAVEN GIRLS SCHOOL

Class Photograph - c1946

By Laurie Stonehouse

The following picture was probably taken on the steps outside the old Girls School, this building was demolished in 1969 and was situated next to the original police station in Dacre Road "South Way" opposite the entrance to South Road. On closer inspection the steps and doorway look like the entrance to the hall next to the council offices in Fort Road?

The teacher in the photograph is Miss Baldwin, the only pupil that we can name is Beryl Wingate. If you are in the picture or you can name the other pupils please add your information in the comments below the image.

I think this photo was taken in 1945 and is of the school choir when we went to an inter schools choir festival. I think it was in Lewes. Miss Baldwin was our music teacher. We would have been in our last year of junior school. Standing next to Pamela Peters in the front row, on her right, is Janet. I am in the second row from the back, third one along from the right, with blonde hair (near Miss Baldwin). I think Greta Mainwood is next to me. Other names I recall are Sheila Sweatman, Mary Bastin.

If my memory serves me correctly, the girls in this picture are: Front row L to R :-  June Clark, Janet Davis, Pamela Peters, Valerie Newall, Anita Richardson, Joyce Ford, Jean Coombs. Second row L to R :- Betty Belton, Sylvia Kemp, June Gates, Jean Saunders, Doris Hilton, Maureen Malley, Rosemary Heaver, Helene Whitman. Third row L to R:-  Brenda Ellis, Rita Boxall, Beryl Wingate, Jennifer Baldwin, Mary Risbridger, Valerie Lowles. Back row L to R:-  Miss Baldwin, Jane White, Sheila Cottington, Eleanor "someone"?, unknown, Doreen Denyer, Gwen Ladd. I think the year the picture was taken would be 1943 or 1944 because looking at myself, for instance, I can see I would be about ten or eleven. Anyway, great memories. Thank you to Laurie Stonehouse who posted it and to my brother-in-law Bill Shepherdson in Australia who spotted me in the picture and sent it on. I have good memories of my years at Newhaven School for Girls and still keep in touch with my special friend, Betty Belton. Helene Patten (nee Whitman)

Rosemary Heaver was close friend of mine at this time, she lived in Meeching Road and I lived in Norman Road.

Does anyone remember me.

Please leave a comment if you do..
