1 Norton Terrace

This is the original Amy store on the main floor of their house at 1 Norton Terrace.  John Amy and Mary Dyer were both from Jersey, were married there in 1878 and moved to Newhaven shortly after for John to work on the breakwater. By 1891 John is listed as a grocer, this being the little shop he opened. 
In the photo are Mary Dyer Amy, 2 of her children, Jack (left) and Elizabeth (right) and and an unknown toddler. Photo taken approx 1900. John Amy was obviously successful as, when land across the street came up for sale, he purchased several lots for a couple of houses and the new M. Amy store, run by his wife Mary (original photo from Graham Amy).  Behind the M. Amy store at the bottom of the garden was a small haberdashery shop also owned by the Amy family, unfortunately I do not have a photo of it.

My grandmother lived at 1 Norton Terrace after she was adopted by the Richardson family in 1934 (she was born at 17 Norton Terrace in 1923 to the Kerr family). Albert Richardson was a master baker and ran a bakery from there. He lived there until he died in 1984. My grandmother worked in the bakery herself from the age of 14 and until she married my grandfather in 1947. Albert was married to Eva Eliza (nee) Le Seelleur; coincidentally(?), her father's family also originated from Jersey.

My parents brought Amy Stores back in 1983/1984 and ran the shop until it closed in 2004/2005. Amy Stores was converted by my parents into two flats (one flat built on top of the shop). I own and live in the flat which was the shop and my sister lives in the flat above so technically we have been living here for 40 years!
