WORK ON RAILWAY QUAY

July/August 2012

By Carol Walton & Andy Gilbert

Work being carried out to remove the wooden piling along the northern end of the Railway Quay, leaving the quay to slope down towards the river. Necessity (was it falling down anyway) or preparation for sale to a developer?

It's so upsetting to watch more and more of Newhaven decay and get taken away. I remember the harbour ringing with the thumps of the pile-driver from the barge Barrowhead as the great greenhart piles were regularly renewed. There was constant maintenance going on and the harbour bustled with shipping and the fishing fleet. Now it seems like everything is being demolished, swept up and dumped. Is this progress or disposal?

Sad to see the marine workshops abandoned and decaying.
