SILVER JUBILEE OF KING GEORGE AND QUEEN MARY 1935
Mayors speech and telegram to the Royal Couple
By Lorna Pratt
The year 1935 saw the celebration of the Silver Jubilee of King George and Queen Mary. William Ernest Bussey who was the Mayor of Newhaven at that time gave this stirring speech to the people of Newhaven expressing feelings of loyalty and congratulations to the Royal Couple. Below the speech are words sent in a telegram by him on behalf of the people of Newhaven to their Royal Highnesses. I also possess the envelope from Buckingham Palace which contained the reply but sadly not the contents which may perhaps be in the archives somewhere.
