THE BRIGHTON BREEZY 45157

British Railways Standard Class 5, 45157

The London Midland and Scottish Railway then British Railways Standard Class 5, 4-6-0 (universally known as the Black Five) number 45157 (The Glasgow Highlander and renamed as The Brighton Breezy) visiting Newhaven on a railtour in February 2002. It was introduced in 1934 and 842 examples were built up to 1951.

18 locomotives are preserved including this one. The rest were scrapped.

Sorry to be pedantic but just a minor correction to the caption above. The London Midland Scottish (LMS) Black 5's were not 'Standard Class 5' locomotives as the text above indicates. The 'Standard Class 5' came after the 'Black 5' and were produced between 1951 and 1957. These were also 4-6-0's and were very similar to Black 5's but with a much higher running plate to make for easier maintenance and access to the valve gear. The 'Standards' were designed by Robin Riddles who was responsible for the design of all 'Standard' class locos when the various railway regions were amalgamated into British Rail in 1948. Some 999 standard class loco's were built of various wheel arrangements, the final one fittingly named 'Evening Star'. Great photo's, thanks for posting.

Don't know about the visit, the Loco used to be at the East Lancs Railway. It might still be there.
