Southdown Christmas nativity play, 1991 the angel is Tammy Stevens, Mary:- Vicky Clark, Joseph:- Anthony Mayo, Three Kings:- Guy Everest, Kevin Kinshot, Damion Sutton.
Wow! This really takes me back to the '50's. The final scene of our nativity plays, at Christ Church Hall, was very similar, with the Archangel Gabriel spreading his arms in blessing over all of us. The costumes have changed little. It's just the missing "Utility" marks.
Utility marks. what was utility marks william?
Utility marks were used during the war. It denoted cheaply made stuff, which was available during tight rationing. My parents had sets of really good quality utility bedding right up to the '60's. The utility mark was a red circular spot next to red crescent, I think. At Meeching County Junior School, a lot of the costumes were made utility sheets and the red marks used to show.
Sorry William, I was just having a bit of fun with you. I also slept on utility marked bedding and even my wardrobe was made from recycled timber. If I remember, it had Tate & Lyle written on the rear plywood panel. That was recycling at its best. Your description of the utility mark was "spot on".
Hi Will. You've jogged this old memory about the Christ Church Hall nativities. In 1962 I had the starring role of Joseph and did 3 performances to packed crowds. I can only have been 11 but I got star struck and had thoughts of becoming the next John Wayne. It never happened though. Oh well, we all need dreams.
