These bring back memories! The first picture shows Williamson's hardware shop, Don Williamson was, I believe, a cousin of my father. Don had a brother Reg who owned the chemists at the junction of South Coast Road and Roderick Avenue in Peacehaven. Unusual to see the High Street almost deserted; I guess these were taken quite early in the morning (the clock shows 6.10). Before this area was pedestrianised, I used to love riding my bike down Brighton Road, into the High Street, and around the sharp right hand bend into Bridge Street! Happy days...

When I started work as an apprentice carpenter I was sent to Williamsons to buy my first tools, saw, plane, hammer and ruler. No tapes in those days. The plane was a wooden jackplane,I was told to take the blade out, block up the jaws at the bottom with putty and fill it up with linseed oil and keep topping it up till it woudnt take any more. It certainly preserved it. I still have it, it has still got oil soaked into it and works. To be honest I didnt use it much as electric planers came in, much easier to use, although we were made to finish off with a hand plane. I used to get 10% off at Williamsons as long as I proved I was an apprentice.
