HARBOUR PHOTOS FROM JOHN HENDY - 1

Shipping scenes from a famous photographer

By Andy Gilbert and John Hendy

I have recently been in touch with John Hendy, who is well known as a marine photographer. He is also the author of many excellent books on ferries and shipping and a contributor to many of the shipping magazines.

He's a local man, born in Lewes, and Newhaven was his 'home port' in its heyday. He's very kindly allowed me to publish some of his work on Our Newhaven and we will see photos from the 1960's almost to the present day.

I'll start with a trio of photos from the early 1960's.

Photo:Brighton (VI), at the East Quay, having just arrived from Dieppe. Decks still full of passangers about to disembark.

Photo:Londres at the Railway Quay in the Autumn of 1963. Withdrawn from service at the end of the season, she awaits sale to Greek owners at the end of the year. The dredger AA Raymond is undergoing conversion up at the Marine Workshops, and I wonder what our lifeboat Kathleen Mary is doing so far upriver.

Love these pictures...spent many a happy hour going around the harbour in the late 50s early 60s. Spent all my summer holidays in Newhaven staying with my gran. Those were the days!!!

Picture No.2, is it Newhaven's lifeboat the Kathleen Mary, or is it another one on passage? I can't get a clear enough image to tell.

I asked John Hendy to look at his original hi-res image. He confirms it is our lifeboat Kathleen Mary. Andy

I was an engineer on the BRIGHTON for ten years she could roll alarmingly no stabilisers. I remember hanging on to a steel bar that was the width of the maneuvering platform just in front of the gaugeboard. Happy Days
