SOUTHERN ENGINEERING GARAGE

Top of the high street

By Dave Hampton

This old photo shows the Southern Engineering Garage at the top of the high street on the site where Arrow Tyres burnt down in the 70's and where I believe the Job Centre is now.

This later became known as Amy's Garage and not only did they carry out repair work but also provided the town with a taxi and ambulance service.

It was Amy's Ambulance that carried my mother to Brighton when she was giving birth to me. Also Dad used to hire their old "sit-up-and-beg" Ford Pop for our twice yearly epics to Norfolk. Does anyone remember the small shop? I got several of my Dinky toys from there.
