FERGUSONS / J2T VIDEO - Denton Island

Sussex Express Article - March 2014

By Carol Walton

Our picture this month shows the staff of Fergusons/British Radio Corporation/Thorn Consumer Electronics/J2T Video.  The picture was taken around the mid 70’s.

The factory opened on Denton Island in 1963.  It was originally called Ferguson Radio Corporation, then British Radio Corporation, then Thorn Consumer Electronics, finally becoming J2T Video.  The Company closed in 1988.  Although the name changed over the years to reflect the products being made, it was always the same company.  The music centre in the photo was an exact copy of the largest selling products of the day, although it is made completely out of wood.  The model was made for the company’s entry in the Newhaven Carnival.

My Uncle Stanley Spencer was chief executive of J2T, through the 1980's.

I believe my Dad Reg Laycock used to visit Stan when he was unwell, the photo certainly brings back memories.
