Sculpture in Fort Road

By Jackie Blackwell

This sculpture was designed and built by Chris, a pupil at Tideway School who won a competition led by South Downs Council for Voluntary Services and run in partnership with Newhaven Town Council, GW Ironworks and Newhaven Strategic Network.

I had seen the empty space left behind once the War Memorial was removed and approached Ian Everest, Town Clerk at Newhaven Town Council to see what was going to be in its place. As there were no plans other than to put a bollard there, I suggested we could run a project for young people to design a sculpture with a maritime theme.  Money was raised from Awards for All to run the project and in July 2006 the sculpture, titled the Lookout, was officially unveiled.

Chris and his friend (pictured on the sculpture) also helped to make the sculpture at local welders, GW Ironworks.

The mosaic plinth was created at workshops during the annual Fish Festival organised by NCDA, where local people stuck on a tile or two!

The finished result is truly Made in Newhaven!

I think the boy who did the sculpture was called Darren, not Chris.

I am the child who designed this sculpture and my name is Darren Woodley and I would like to know who this Chris person is as he is taking all my credit for my hard work.
