LOW LIGHT PHOTOS OF THE HARBOUR
Taken at the turn of the 20th century.
By Andy Gilbert & Ben Franks
At the Fish Festival, one of our visitors, Ben Franks, told us of some Lantern Slides he had bought, taken by the celebrated Eastbourne photographer Ellis Kelsey.
He has very kindly sent us these two wonderful images of Newhaven.
A very atmospheric view of Newhaven harbour taken from the swing bridge. The paddle steamer at the right is the Paris III, and other ships in the river include some of the 'Dieppe Screws' and the harbour tugs.
The end of the breakwater, showing the railway tracks and looking across towards Seaford Head. Again, the mood is captured perfectly, with the rain soaked concrete of the breakwater reflecting the light from the lighthouse, and the gloomy sky over the bay.
Ellis Kelsey had many of his photographs displayed at Royal Photographic Society exhibitions just after the turn of the 20th Century.
His self portrait from 1911 shows him as an elderly man and, as his photos are now appearing on other sites, I think it's safe to say that copyright has expired. But if anyone can show that this is not the case, please advise us and we'll remove the images.
