THE BRIDGE HOTEL

From the collection of Carolyn Proud

By Andy Gilbert

Carolyn Proud has been sharing some of her collection of Sussex photos and postcards on the excellent "Memories of East Sussex" Facebook page. She has kindly said that I can share views of Newhaven here, for those who don't 'do' Facebook.

So here are three featuring the Bridge Hotel at the bottom of the High Street. We'll start with this one, which we think is from the mid to late 1950s.

Then we skip forward a few years to one that's dated 1964. The mock tudor beams have gone and the appearance is closer to what it is now (thankfully renovations are at last under way!) Note the AA sign for the then brand new car ferry service - before any 'official' signs had been put up.

And finally, here's a view that I haven't seen before, taken from the side. Mrs Warnes' shop is seen at the left. What was the name of this little street?

I was going to say Riverside, John, but the sign on the wall is a short word followed by what I assume is ST. Perhaps High St turned left and continued on to join up with Riverside a few yards later? Hence the question. I wonder if there's a street map on file at Newhaven Museum.

Yes Andy on some of your earlier posts you called it Riverside, the shop could well have been in High Street, but the old maps site online show Riverside starting at the junction of High Street where the Warnes Shop was situated.

Riverside going northwest led to Sussex Square and Essex Square/Place.

I think it said High Street. When the island bridge was the only bridge over the river, High Street must have continued up to it.
