SAND SWAN
A sad end
By Derek Parker and Andy Gilbert
Derek Parker has kindly allowed me to share a rather sad sight.
This is 'Sand Swan' heading towards her final fate at Torbay. She was one of the regular suction dredgers at Newhaven and would unload her cargo of sand and gravel up at the North Quay back 'in the day'.
You could trace the prefix 'Sand', followed by the name of a bird of your choice, back to the 1960s at least, when the little 'Sand Martin' would discharge at the 'coal wharf' near The Ark on the West Quay.
How many can you recall? Swift, Swan, Serin, Martin, Dart, Gull, for starters!
