Looks like a high spring tide with the old swing bridge in operation, (now a historic picture! ) I remember on one occasion, after having had a few too many beers, while passing over bridge (presumably on a staggered route home), I and a certain vandal took the capstan centre boss and dropped it in the river thus delaying bridge openings. I believe that the capstan centre boss was retrieved by a diver later after which normal service could resume.

I have just noted the previous posting, and would just like to confirm that I WAS NOT INVOLVED, with the old bridge capstain hub/boss being dropped into the river. This was an incident which took place late one night after certain individuals carried out this act of vandalism after a drinking session!!! (This is to address this miss print previously wrongly stated.)
