So what happened between 1861 and 1871 to see the population nearly double? Work at the harbour, perhaps?

The railway and passenger/mail boats were also operating from here at that time, the straightening cuts to the river and the swingbridge were consructed around about 1863.

My Great-Great-Grandfather lived in Bishopstone in 1772. I wonder what the population was in Newhaven then?

"What is the population in 2008? By Reigna Mitchell On 26/05/2008" Not sure about in 2008 but I believe we are somewhere between eleven and twelve thousand now. With the Census coming up next month we should find out later exactly how many of us there are.

Apparently the population of Newhaven from the 2011 Census is 12,250 It will most likely soon grow as a new housing estate of approx 190 new homes is to be built at East Side.

The cement works opened in 1884, which contributed to the increase of population in the 1891 census.
