HOUSE BOAT

'Tis rumoured that in the late 60's early 70's when the Barge first appeared at this mooring, TV personality Richard Stilgoe lived on it. Can anyone confirm that?

Richard Stilgo was on his way from Wales to London when the barge broke down off Newhaven. It was towed in & that is where it's been ever since (early 70's). He converted it & lived on it with his girlfriend, who at the time sang at Glyndebourne. I sold him a painted orange piano. Could it still be aboard...?

I remember Richard Stilgo on the boat. I worked at the old Ferguson Factory on Denton Island from 1963 to 1988 and use to see him on deck occasionally during the late 60's or early 70's. Surely it's not still there is it ?

I can remember back in the early 1970's various other hulks / houseboats at this berth which seemed to attract Hippies and as a result being regularly raided by the police. I wonder whether the occupants of these craft paid mooring fees or Local Council Tax in order to grace the River Ouse at this prime Newhaven location?

That was not the boat the Richard Stilgoe used to live on. There were two boats there in the 70s, the Roda-B and the Paragon-M. I used to live on a boat just round the corner called Bold Pioneer. This boat is the Roda-B, Richard Stilgoe used to live on the Paragon-M that was moored ajacent to this boat. I know the guy's name who owns this boat, and has done since the late sixties when he brought it down from Kingston on Thames.

Hi, does anyone know if the boat is for sale as it looks like it could brush up quite well, and it would be a shame for the hull to rust through and sink on its moorings.

I think Newhaven has more pressing and important issues to worry about than one rusty houseboat!

So who does own it? The poor old boat is now very neglected.

Its still there to this day, however its just a brown shell now. I would have thought something would have been done about it by now.
