TUG "NORE COMMODORE"

Replacement for Tug "Meeching"

By Andy Gilbert

Although there are plenty of photos already on the site of "Meeching" and "Foremost 22", here is the "Nore Commodore", one of the tugs that replaced "Meeching". Owned by Murray Tugs of Kent, she was a little smaller and less powerful than the "Meeching".

She was here for several years and spent most of her time lying at the seaward end of the East Quay, which is where she is in this picture. Now, of course, we have no tug at all, and Nore Commodore is rusting away alongside her predecessor at Queenborough on the Medway. What will happen if and when the urgent need for a tug arises is anyone's guess.

Edit 31/3/08: My 'spies' on the Medway tell me that Nore Commodore has had a reprieve and is working again, but looks in poor condition.
