The Romney Hut at the end of the afternoon!!

Good Friday 21 March 2008
By Sylvia Woolford
The rain held off, and the sun shone, even though it was cold and wind it didn't deter lots of Newhaven locals and Fort visitors coming to join in our first 'Our Newhaven' event held in the Romney Hut at Newhaven Fort.
The afternoon started with a Good Friday Church Service (Newhaven Churches Together), and then followed with a wonderfully acted Community Play conceived by 'Act on It' drama group and performed by local children. The starting point for the play had been inspired from stories told to Act On It over cups of tea with Newhaven Women's Institute and the Historical Society. The recollections of local people together with images and memories from the Our Newhaven site capture the imagination of the cast.
The people from 'Newhaven's Country Market' provided fresh homemade produce and crafts, and local community groups were on hand to give out information. The team of 'Our Newhaven' editors scanned people's photographs and took down memories, and Mr Bailey and Mr Balcombe from the Museum answered historical questions and showed photographs.
The afternoon finished with the long rope, a huge skipping rope which used to be a traditional Good Friday event in Newhaven where local people would jump into the rope to ensure a good fishing harvest.
I had a good time and I hope everyone else enjoyed the afternoon.
A thank you to Awards to All for funding the event and and thank you to 'Newhaven Fort' for hosting the event.
