1970's - Potted History
By Eileen Farrow
'Ladies Break' came into being because three Health Visitors, Jean Ball, Mary Daniels and Mary O'Malley saw a need for mums to have an evening away from their families and to meet other mums. They could listen to speakers, go on trips and generally socialise with each other.
In June 1971, a meeting was held at the Brighton Health Authority building in Hillcrest Road, which was attended by more than 30 mums, together with the Health Visitors. The group's name 'Ladies Break' was chosen by ballot and it was agreed to meet once a month on the 2nd Thursday evening, which remains to this day.
When the Brighton Health Authority decided to sell their building, the group moved into the Hillcrest Playgroup's Porta-cabin. In 1996 the group moved into the Hillcrest Building for a while, until it moved into the Day Centre in Chapel Street where it remains to this day.
Membership today is between 40-50, and everyone of all ages are welcome.
