NEWHAVEN TOWN STATION

1944

By Richard Beckett

1944 and the end of World war 2 is still a year away. The train shown here is on its way to Seaford and it still has protective mesh on the drivers windows to prevent splintering in case of bomb damage. Note the small cutout area so the driver can see out. Also the canopy ( and buildings ) on this platform removed sometime in the 1970's I believe.

Nice to see this old picture!  From 1949 to 1956 I travelled home from school in Lewes to Newhaven, every weekday, in exactly this kind of non-corridor train. It was the 4.04 from Lewes. The front pair of carriages were for the girls and the rear pair for the boys; no mixing permitted! Good company and great days!
