TIDEMILLS VILLAGE

Views of the ruins

By Laurie Stonehouse

Views of the ruins at Tidemills taken April 2008.  There is quite a lot of history surrounding Tidemills, it was condemmed in the late 1930's. There are plenty of information boards placed all around the site.  It is a very pleasant walk from Eastside, Bishopstone, or from the car park in between Denton Corner and Bishopstone.

What memories this series of photos brings back. Mum & I used to walk to and from Seaford on summer days. I got stung by my first hornet by the walls at the footpath and saw my first kingfisher at the arches in photo #6. I also remember getting a clout for hanging over the footbridge which crossed the railway lines, while a steam engine puffed its way past. I got covered in smuts and soot but loved every second. It was a good walk for a six year old and all for Sainsbury's delicious fruit pies.

Photo 9 shows the farm yard area, note the 21/2 buttresses. The left hand one has been used for Army demolition training and drilled in many places before the 3 holes that contained the charges were put in. This cut the buttress neatly across. The digging and recording has started again in this area, if you have any photos of this area or the barn please contact me via the Museum website. Thanks Pete

I can remember seeing Kingfishers around the arches as a child when we used to cycle out there from our home in Denton.
