SOUTH ROAD

Does anyone else remember pigeons being kept in the basement of a house near The Volunteer.  You could see them through the window which was below pavement level and protected by a metal grate. There was also a sewing machine shop on the same side and what used to be the town Police Station/jail.  Opposite, which was the Boys/youth Club, next to the fish & chip shop & newsagents.  I lived at the opposite end of South Road near the junction of Chapel Street (No.58) and would have to re-render the outside every year or two as our immediate neighbour (No.60 the Sargeants) was slowly slipping down the hill towards the war memorial. The end house was built in 1886 as a single house, and we were added to start a terrace in 1887.  If you stand with your back to the Prince of Wales pub you can see where different builders added groups of different designed terraced houses to South Road as there are 3 or 4 in one style and then it would change to another style for a couple of houses and so-on.  Some of the houses on the Chapel Street side also had basements,  and I often wondered why the end 4 didn't as they had the natural slope of the hill to work with.

Cor, these take me back a bit....my Nan, Aunty, and Uncle used to live at # 23 (opposite what was the Shakespeare hall - boy's club) and my cousin still lives opposite the chippie. Living in the U.S.A now, I love looking at these old piccies. Oh, what memories of going to Brownies and sneaking over to the sweetie shop, that used to be opposite the church hall, to spend my 'subs' and wondering how long before my mom found out.......jumble sales, and the Christmas fair in the church hall, sitting on Father Christmas's knee (it really was Mr Funnell yer know)

I need help please, does anyone have any old pictures of the chippy on South Road? I have looked but cant find any, any help would be much appreciated.
