In his heyday he had musical success on both sides of the Atlantic. His singing was accompanied to delighted squeals from his adoring, mostly female, audience. His flamboyant act and hits including Give Me the Moonlight, Green Door and Garden of Eden, ensured his fame as a popular showman and entertainer for well over 30 years. He also made a number of film appearances including, most notably, in 1960, Let's Make Love starring Marilyn Monroe.

He maintained his loyalty to the national association of Boys Clubs because of the help that he was given while a refugee in Lancaster during World War II.

Frankie Vaughan died in 1999.

Frankie was my all time heart throb from the age of 13/14. I was in the crowds this day at the fete, but I don't think I would recognise myself.

I went to see Frankie five times at the Hippodrome in Brighton a few years before these pictures were taken, and he reminded me of it when I met him on the stage in Eastbourne (as a nan) 25 years later!!

Someone asked who the cleric is. I think it may be Rev. Scorer. He went to Canada some years later

Reigna, Frankie was my idol as well! His laugh used to make me go weak at the knees & the twinkle in his eyes was to die for!!!

Hi, I remember this event and was somewhere in the picture. Frankie was a very good friend to us at the Newhaven Boys Club. Some more good pictures Colin, I am sure you will remember Ronnie Lowles who lived a few doors up the road from us and that he became one of Frankie's " V " men playing a guitar.

I remember going to this fete. My Dad took loads of photos which we sent to Frankie in Brighton, where he was appearing. He signed the lot and returned them to us. He also used to visit the Gracie Fields children's home in Peacehaven whenever he was in the area.

Where was this fete held? With the Dr's house in the background I'm assuming it was on the field where Grays School is now located.

The subtitle to the page says it's Grays Field, so you're correct! Andy-Editor

I was a paper boy for the Horsecraft family during the 1940s.

I sometimes sold papers to the returning forces on the Harbour Railway Station during that time.
