The Newfield Arms is on the left side of Brighton Road, just opposite Murray Avenue, but is no longer a pub, it has recently been converted into flats although the outside is still the same, also the car park has now got three houses built on it , but I don't know what will be built on the large garden which backs onto Rose Walk, probably more flats ! Two generations of the Shearing family were the longest serving landlords and Les Hawkins, ( who was landlord of The Railway pub before it was pulled down to make way for the new flyover.) was one of the last. Les and his wife Jean also ran The General Ardagh pub in Newhaven Fort, until it was closed and made into part of the museum. I worked in both pubs for them.

Is this really the 1970's-the car on the left looks much older?

As the 'Newfield Pub' has been mentioned I immediately thought back to the mid 60's when a group consisting of Barry & Peter Woolford, Trevor & Keith Blacktin & Alan Bonfield and myself would meet on a Friday night & all be waiting outside at 6pm for Arthur or Nell Shearing to unlock! There was a really useful window in the Public Bar because you could see the Brighton  bus coming around the Seaford Road so you knew you had 10mins to finish your drink before the bus stopped outside the pub to go to Brighton.
Fond memories !!

Vicky, now I realise who you are. I looked after the snooker hall at The Fort when you were in the pub, again until it closed, or should I say until there were no wages one day.

I went to school with David Shearing, and in later years played darts for the Volunteer pub and we visited the Newfield pub on many occasions, it was always a good evening.
