COLLAPSE OF WEST QUAY WALL
1976
By Richard Beckett
A poor reproduction, but who remembers the collapse of the west quay near the Hope Inn in 1976?
At the time of the collapse, I was working for the Civil Engineers Dept of British Rail and I became involved with the surveying which was carried out to assess the cause and remedial work required to repair and reinstate the quayside. British Rail as owners made short work of the repairs I seem to recall.
I wonder what would happen these days under the jurisdiction of the present owners of the harbour, considering their way of dealing with the poor condition of the breakwater and harbour wall along the sand beach?
