SOUTH WAY / DACRE ROAD 1950 & 2009

Then and Now

By Laurie Stonehouse

The following pictures show the middle section of South Way; the first photo from the 1950's is before the ring road, a pleasant view with the old Infants' School and Christ Church in their prime. The next three pictures show the demolition of the old Girls' School and two properties in Meeching Road - these  had to be removed to make way for the Ring Road. The construction of South Way did require the removal of many other buildings, Sussex Place was lost forever and a section of Chapel Street disappeared. Church Road and Meeching Avenue also vanished, the Dacre Road name was moved into the town where the local Taxis now queue.

The end house in Meeching Road, as clearly seen in the photo, belonged to local piano teacher Margaret Moyes. I wonder how many locals, like me, started their musical endeavours on the Bechstein baby grand in her front room? - Andy, Editor.

I used to go to a pre-school play group at Christ Church with a lot of other children. I disliked going there as I was only 3 when I started. My mother got me in there as she needed more time with my younger brother who had epilepsy. I also started school a year early and I didnt think much of that either. I can remember falling into a paddling pool once and having to wear horrible navy blue school shorts for the rest of the day. Funny the things you remember. We had to go for a lie down on canvas camp beds every afternoon. My wife can remember having rattan mats to lie down on at her school in Coventry. She is very envious of Our Newhaven as there is nothing like this there. Keep up the good work, it's much better than television.
